Description
The University of Sindh—commonly known as Sindh University—is a public research university located in Jamshoro, Sindh. It was established in 1947 in Karachi and later relocated to Hyderabad in 1951. In 1955–56, it moved to a sprawling campus in Jamshoro, where it currently operates across approximately 1,250–2,300 acres of landscaped grounds. As one of Pakistan’s oldest universities, it has played a central role in the development of higher education in the province.
Sindh University serves more than 32,000 students, with a diverse faculty of around 600–700 academic staff members, delivering undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs across numerous disciplines, including natural sciences, social sciences, arts, humanities, education, law, Islamic studies, commerce, business administration, and Sindhology. It is accredited by the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan and holds ISO certification (2015), demonstrating its commitment to quality.
The university has earned a national ranking of 18th in Pakistan across general institutions and is globally ranked around #3,400–3,401 in 2024–25, placing it among the top 50% worldwide in fields such as biology, chemistry, engineering, and liberal arts. Sindh University holds full membership in the Association of Commonwealth Universities and maintains academic exchange programs with leading UK institutions such as Durham, Manchester, Sussex, Essex, Leicester, and Nottingham.
The university campus features modern amenities, including a central library, indoor recreational facilities, a cultural museum, Wi-Fi-enabled classrooms, and student housing. Efforts have been made to enhance campus life for all, including amenities exclusively for women students. The university also fosters cultural and scholarly study through entities like the Institute of Sindhology, which preserves and promotes Sindhi heritage via its museum, art gallery, and research library. Established in 1962 as the Sindhi Academy and later expanded into the Institute, it continues to be a beacon for Sindh’s intellectual and cultural preservation.
Among its distinguished alumni and leadership, I. I. Kazi (Imdad Ali Imam Ali Kazi) is celebrated as a founding figure at the university’s Jamshoro location, having launched its initial academic and research infrastructure in the 1950s. He also established Pakistan’s first Department of Education at Sindh University during his tenure as Vice Chancellor.
