
Sindh Madressatul Islam University (SMIU) is a chartered university recognized by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. Established as one of the oldest institutions in South Asia, it holds historical significance as the alma mater of the Founder of Pakistan, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, who studied here from 1887 to 1892.
The university is located in the commercial hub of Karachi near I.I. Chundrigar Road, close to Habib Bank Plaza and MCB Tower. Spread over more than eight acres, the campus features iconic colonial-era buildings designed by James Strachan in the 1880s.
SMIU currently has five departments offering undergraduate and graduate programs: Media and Communication Studies, Computer Science, Business Administration, Environmental Sciences, and Education. The university boasts a highly qualified faculty with a large number of PhD holders among newly established universities in Pakistan.
The campus is equipped with modern facilities such as air-conditioned classrooms, multimedia projectors, and specially designed furniture. It features a state-of-the-art television and FM radio studio, offering hands-on training to students and journalists alike. Its IT labs are equipped with the latest technology and high-speed internet, providing access to research journals, repositories, and e-libraries.
The university library houses over 15,000 books, including rare editions, and subscribes to national and international journals with HEC-supported digital access. Additionally, it maintains a Jinnah Museum showcasing relics related to Quaid-e-Azam and Khan Bahadur Hassanally Effendi, as well as a newly established archives section.
SMIU has a fully air-conditioned, state-of-the-art auditorium named after Sir Shahnawaz Bhutto, where academic and co-curricular events like debates, drama, and competitions are regularly held. A cafeteria on campus offers hygienic and affordable food options.
Field visits and recreational trips are encouraged for both students and faculty. The university is also expanding with a 100-acre campus being developed in Karachi’s Education City.
