Mehran University of Engineering and Technology (MUET), located in Jamshoro, Sindh, is one of Pakistan’s leading institutions for engineering and technology education. Established in 1963 as the Sindh University Engineering College with just two departments, it initially functioned under the University of Sindh. In 1977, it was granted independent university status by the Government of Sindh and renamed MUET. Since its inception, the university has experienced substantial growth in academic offerings, research activity, infrastructure, and national recognition.
The university envisions becoming a world-class educational and research institute, dedicated to technological advancement and socio-economic development through innovation and sustainability. Its mission is to produce skilled professionals and leaders who can make meaningful contributions to the engineering industry and broader society.
MUET offers a broad range of academic programs, including more than 24 undergraduate degrees such as Bachelor of Engineering (B.E.), Bachelor of Science (B.S.), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), and Bachelor of Architecture (B.Arch). The university also offers a variety of postgraduate programs, including Master's and PhD degrees. Additionally, MUET is actively involved in digital literacy and IT training through initiatives like the People’s Information Technology Programme (PITP) and the National Freelance Training Program, which are designed to provide free skill-based education in collaboration with the Government of Sindh.
The university’s academic structure is divided into several faculties, including Architecture & Civil Engineering, Electrical & Computer Engineering, Mechanical & Earth Engineering, and Science & Humanities. These faculties offer disciplines such as Civil Engineering, Software Engineering, Mechatronics, Petroleum Engineering, and many others. MUET emphasizes outcome-based education and curriculum design that meets international standards and industry requirements.
Research and innovation are central to MUET’s identity. It was the first public engineering university in Pakistan to receive ISO 9000 certification and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. The university has earned recognition in national and international rankings, including the QS Asia Rankings. Its key research focus areas include water resources, environmental sustainability, renewable energy, and digital technologies.
MUET also boasts modern infrastructure to support academic and extracurricular activities. The campus includes a 20,000 square foot Student-Teacher Centre, a well-equipped library with over 180,000 books, hostels that can accommodate more than 2,100 students, and a 700-seat multimedia auditorium. These facilities contribute to a dynamic and engaging student life.
From its humble origins, MUET has grown to serve around 6,000 students annually, supported by a strong alumni network of over 35,000 graduates. In order to increase access to technical education, the university established a constituent campus in Khairpur Mir’s, which was upgraded in 2013 to serve students from interior Sindh.
The academic strength of MUET is bolstered by a highly qualified faculty, including more than 200 PhD-holders. The university is deeply engaged with industry partners and supports innovation through entrepreneurship centers and a growing start-up ecosystem. Many of its faculty members and students have received national and international recognition for their research and contributions in fields such as computer science, materials engineering, and water resource management.
