The Institute of Business Administration (IBA), Karachi, was established in 1955 and is recognized as the oldest business school in Pakistan and one of the earliest established outside North America. It was founded with the technical support of the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and later the University of Southern California. Originally a constituent college of the University of Karachi, IBA gained independent degree-awarding status in 1994. Over the decades, it has evolved into a multidisciplinary institution, offering a diverse array of undergraduate, graduate, and doctoral programs.
IBA’s vision is to be among the premier learning institutions in Pakistan. Its mission is centered on delivering quality education to students from all backgrounds, promoting ethical leadership, fostering a spirit of critical thinking, and conducting impactful research. The institution emphasizes core values such as integrity, discipline, creativity, tolerance, and teamwork, which are embedded in its academic and administrative culture.
Academically, IBA offers a variety of undergraduate programs including BBA, BS in Computer Science, Accounting and Finance, Economics, and Social Sciences. At the graduate level, it offers MBA (including Executive MBA), MS programs in disciplines like Finance, Economics, Data Science, Journalism, and more. Its PhD programs cover areas such as Computer Science, Economics, and Mathematics. In 2020, IBA restructured its academic departments into three schools: the School of Business Studies (SBS), the School of Economics and Social Sciences (SESS), and the School of Mathematics and Computer Science (SMCS).
The university is also home to several research and professional centers such as the Center for Executive Education (CEE), Center for Excellence in Islamic Finance (CEIF), Center for Entrepreneurial Development (CED), Center for Business and Economic Research (CBER), and the Centre for Excellence in Journalism (CEJ), among others. These centers contribute to research, executive training, and community engagement, positioning IBA as a hub for innovation and leadership development.
IBA is deeply committed to social responsibility. Its Responsible Citizen Initiative (RCI) requires students to engage in community development work, while its National Talent Hunt Program (NTHP) provides coaching and financial aid to students from underserved regions. Furthermore, the Karachi Urban Lab, based at IBA, conducts multidisciplinary research on urban challenges like climate change, governance, and infrastructure.
Known for its rigorous admission criteria and commitment to merit, IBA is accredited by Pakistan’s Higher Education Commission (HEC) and is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities. It has been SAQS-accredited since 2011 and was the first university in Pakistan to be recognized as a CFA University Partner. With a strong reputation for academic excellence and industry relevance, IBA continues to produce leaders who make meaningful contributions to business, governance, and society at large.
