The Sindh Board of Technical Education (SBTE) was established under Sindh Ordinance No. XVI of 1970, replacing the former West Pakistan Board of Technical Education. As a statutory and semi-autonomous body, SBTE is tasked with organizing, regulating, developing, and monitoring technical, vocational, industrial, and commercial education programs across Sindh Province. In response to the needs of students from upper Sindh, a regional office was opened in Sukkur in March 1990.
SBTE’s mission is to maintain a transparent and impartial examination system, establish valid and reliable assessments, and work with industry stakeholders to ensure demand-driven curricula. The board aims to enhance the quality of technical education and vocational training by improving internal processes, administrative efficiency, and educational standards across affiliated institutions.
Over time, SBTE has introduced Competency-Based Training (CBT) programs aligned with the National Vocational Qualification Framework (NVQF). Under this model, students undergo group-based practical training and virtual polytechnic programs designed to meet modern industry needs and address challenges posed by the COVID‑19 pandemic.
In addition to traditional diploma courses, SBTE works closely with the Trade Testing Board Sindh (TTBS), which was established in 1996 under the Sindh Technical Education & Vocational Training Authority (STEVTA). TTBS acts as a qualification-awarding body under the National Occupational Skills Standard (NOSS) and NVQF, offering certification both formally and informally, including recognition of prior learning and S-II level programs.
SBTE collaborates with both public and private vocational training organizations. Private institutes accredited by SBTE can apply for affiliation, go through required inspections, and participate in SBTE-administered examinations. Successful candidates are awarded recognized diplomas such as the Diploma of Associate Engineer (DAE), which is widely accepted and considered equivalent to a Higher Secondary School Certificate (Pre-Engineering) for further education purposes.
The board also operates an online result portal where students can retrieve their scores using their registration number, roll number, or CNIC. Affiliated institutions are located across multiple districts in Sindh—including Karachi, Hyderabad, Sukkur, Mirpurkhas, and others—and examinations are scheduled regionally to ensure accessibility for all candidates.
SBTE remains committed to upgrading technical education, improving examination integrity, and fostering direct linkages with industry to better prepare students for employment and entrepreneurship.
