Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK)

Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK)

Description

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi (BIEK) is an independent government agency responsible for the regulation and administration of higher secondary education (11th and 12th grades) in Karachi. It was formally established on 1 February 1974 under the Sindh Boards of Intermediate and Secondary Education Amendment Acts of 1973 and 1974. However, the process of shifting higher secondary education responsibilities from the University of Karachi to a separate board had begun much earlier, through an ordinance passed in January 1962, as part of educational reforms recommended by the Sharif Commission.

BIEK’s main responsibilities include organizing, regulating, developing, and overseeing intermediate education in Karachi's affiliated colleges. The Board operates in various disciplines such as Pre-Engineering, Pre-Medical, Commerce, and Humanities. The administrative structure is headed by a Chairman, supported by a Secretary who oversees administration and academics, and a Controller of Examinations responsible for conducting exams. These key officials are appointed by the Governor of Sindh or a nominee acting as the Controlling Authority of the Board.

Since its inception, the Board has experienced significant growth. It began by conducting its first Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSSC) examinations in May 1974, with approximately 51,000 candidates and 50 affiliated colleges. By 2023, BIEK was managing exams for over 275,000 students from around 409 affiliated colleges. Embracing modernization, BIEK has introduced digital services, including online enrolment, exam registration, fee submission through banks and courier services, digital result processing, and the issuance of standardized certificates and mark sheets that meet international standards.

The Board of Intermediate Education Karachi is headquartered at Bakhtiyari Youth Centre, Block P, North Nazimabad, Karachi, 74600. It continues to serve as the central authority for intermediate education in the city, with contact information and official updates available through its public platforms.
